Imam Ali (a.s.) and Qur'an

Abaan relates from Sulaym ibne Qais that:

"I was sitting near Hadhrat Ali (a.s.) in Masjid-e-Kufa. Others were also sitting around him. Imam (a.s.) said: `Ask me about the Book of Allah before I am away from you. By Allah not a single verse of the Holy Qur'an was revealed to which Prophet (saw) recited and also gave me its correct Ta'weel (exegises).

Then Ibne Kawwa quired, "what about those verses of the Holy Qur'an which were revealed to the Holy Prophet in your absence? Imam (a.s.) replied: "Yes, when I was not with Holy Prophet (saw), he memorised the verses and when I was back in his presence he would say: "O Ali, after you left, the Almighty Allah revealed such and such verses. Then, he would recite for me and explain me about its Ta'weel."

Ali (a.s.) - The True Successor of the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.) When the Jewish scholars heard the replies of Hadhrat Ali (a.s.) they said, "We bear witness that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad (saw) is His Messenger and Ali (a.s.) is the "Wasi" and successor of the Messenger of Allah as Aaron was the Wasi of Moses. The Battle of Uhud When the Muslims were defeated in the second round, no one remained with the Prophet except Ali and thirteen others of the companions of the Messenger. These thirteen were the first to come back to the Messenger after their flight. It is clear that Ali's defence in that decisive hour was much more valuable than the defence of the thirteen companions put together.

Treaty of Hodaibiya it is evident that this deviation from the path of the Holy Prophet was later to become an acceptable norm rather then an off the cuff event.
